Vin Diesel and Mudbound’s Virgil Williams Working on Crushers Club for NBC

Vin Diesel and Mudbound’s Virgil Williams are working on the boxing drama Crushers Club for NBC

Fast & Furious franchise star Vin Diesel and Mudbound writer and producer Virgil Williams are teaming up to develop a boxing drama for NBC, according to Variety. The show will be called Crushers Club and will take place in a struggling boxing gym. The gym “serves as a second home for kids in one of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods.” The gym gains an ally from a single mom named Sonia who’s got a new purpose in life.

Williams will write Crushers Club. He will also executive produce with Diesel. Shana C. Waterman, who is the head of TV for Diesel’s One Race Television ,will co-executive produce. Universal Television will produce in association with One Race.

Williams is the co-writer (with director Dee Rees) of Mudbound, which will hit Netflix on November 17. The drama stars Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, Mary J. Blige, Rob Morgan, Jonathan Banks and Garrett Hedlund.

Set in the rural American South during World War II, Dee Rees’ Mudbound is an epic story of two families pitted against one another by a ruthless social hierarchy, yet bound together by the shared farmland of the Mississippi Delta. It follows the McAllan family, newly transplanted from the quiet civility of Memphis and unprepared for the harsh demands of farming. Despite the grandiose dreams of Henry (Clarke), his wife Laura (Mulligan) struggles to keep the faith in her husband’s losing venture. Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson (Morgan, Blige) — sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations — struggle bravely to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face. The war upends both families’ plans as their returning loved ones, Jamie McAllan (Hedlund) and Ronsel Jackson (Mitchell), forge a fast but uneasy friendship that challenges the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South in which they live.
