Romancing the Stone Heads to Television

Word on a remake of Robert Zemeckis’ 1984 adventure film Romancing the Stone has been relatively quiet since it was first announced nearly three years ago. Now, Deadline reports that plans have changed and, rather than being set up as a feature film, the property will be developed by NBC as a television series with Shawn Levy producing and potentially attached to direct the pilot.

The original film starred Kathleen Turner as a romance novelist and Michael Douglas as an American soldier of fortune who team together to try and save her missing sister. The new version is said to expand on that premise, swapping the sister character for a brother.

The series plans to head to the network with Mark Friedman (Home of the Brave, “The Forgotten”) writing. Levy is said to be interested in directing, though his upcoming slate is looking to be quite full. His next, Real Steel is hoping to launch a franchise and his name has been brought up in connection to Fantastic Voyage and 20th Century Fox’s Untitled Frankenstein Film, among others.
