DCU‘s Lanterns creator is determined to fix what most superhero TV shows get wrong. The new HBO series will feature an ensemble cast including Aaron Pierre, Kyle Chandler, and more.
What did Damon Lindelof say about the DCU Lanterns show?
Damon Lindelof, a co-creator of the Lanterns TV show, alongside Chris Mundy, has revealed that the DCU project will redefine how superhero shows treat superpowered characters. The focus will remain on portraying the Green Lanterns as humans, with a grounded take on their arcs.
Speaking with Variety, Lindelof explained how writer Tom King came up with a refreshing approach to present the heroes. “It’s easy to forget that superheroes are human beings. What they want are the same things you and I want. That’s Tom’s fundamental approach,” said Lindelof.
“There’s a sophistication to his writing because he’s lived a life. Before I was a writer, I was an assistant for writers; Tom was in the CIA. He’s experienced a level of intensity that permeates his work.”
Lanterns is going to be a murder mystery, and its cast also features Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, and Ulrich Thomsen. Nathan Fillion will make a return, reprising his role as Green Lantern Guy Gardner. Two months ago, Emmy winner Laura Linney also joined the cast of the TV series.

According to the official logline, Lanterns will focus on “new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Lanterns is produced by HBO in partnership with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Ron Schmidt are serving as the executive producers. The show was previously set to arrive on HBO Max but shifted to HBO under the new content delineation plan.
DCU’s Lanterns will have its premiere on August 16, 2026, on HBO.
