The Today Show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie has announced a temporary break. This time, however, her absence has nothing to do with the personal circumstances that kept her off the air earlier this year. Here is why she is stepping away from her morning anchor duties.

Guthrie announced during the July 16 broadcast of Today that she will temporarily leave the morning show to film NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show. The veteran journalist said production will take several weeks as the team films the entire season ahead of its planned release next year.
“It’s going to be fast-paced, it’s going to be family-friendly, and it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Guthrie said while sharing the news with viewers. Her Today co-hosts celebrated the announcement and wished her the best before filming begins. Craig Melvin, Al Roker and the rest of the team expressed excitement about Guthrie’s new TV project. The team also said they are looking forward to seeing her return after production wraps.
NBC first announced the Wordle game show earlier this year, adapting the globally popular word puzzle into a television competition. The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon serves as an executive producer alongside The New York Times, which owns the hit word puzzle. The competition series will feature teams racing to solve five-letter word puzzles, with NBC planning to premiere the show in primetime next year.
This also isn’t the first time the Wordle project has taken Guthrie away from Studio 1A. She briefly missed a few Today episodes in June to attend early production meetings for the series, with Craig Melvin updating viewers on her whereabouts at the time.
Her latest break comes just a few months after she returned to Today following an extended absence earlier this year. Guthrie resumed hosting duties in April and has since balanced her regular schedule with preparations for the new game show.
Viewers should note that her hiatus is only temporary, and she is expected to return once production on the game show concludes.
