New fantastical Disney+ animated series greenlit with working title
Disney+ has greenlit Journey, a new original animated fantasy series now in production, Disney announced on June 15, 2026.
Disney Kids & Family and Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, are behind the project. The music-driven series is being produced by ICON Creative Studio in association with Disney Television Animation.
Journey follows a young heroine living in a city protected by an energy shield. When the shield begins to fail, she answers a mysterious call leading her beyond the city walls. In the forbidden lands beyond, she uncovers her father’s disappearance and discovers a powerful magic within herself.
Matt Munn, whose credits include Ice Age: Collision Course and Spies in Disguise, created the series. He will executive produce alongside Peabody Award winner Steve Loter of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Kim Possible. Jessie Dicovitsky serves as executive producer for Higher Ground.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, spoke about the series in a statement. “Journey’ is an epic adventure anchored by a remarkable young heroine whose courage inspires those around her,” Davis said. She added that the show explores “resilience, self-discovery and the power of believing in something bigger than yourself.”
Dicovitsky, head of television at Higher Ground, also shared her enthusiasm for the project. “Combining adventure, imagination and music, ‘Journey’ is a true original that takes bold swings,” she said. She noted the series builds on Higher Ground’s history of delivering meaningful stories for families.
The series joins Disney+’s expanding animated lineup, which includes Bluey, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, and Phineas and Ferb. Higher Ground’s family franchises also include Waffles + Mochi and Ada Twist, Scientist.
The show reflects Disney’s ongoing commitment to animated storytelling for a new generation.
