Bob Odenkirk surprised fans by returning as Saul Goodman. His surprise return is not only a great callback, but a perfect way to bring back the character.
Odenkirk surprised fans by recently reprising his role as Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman in a new YouTube video. The video, shared on the “Saul4Democracy” channel, acts as a PSA for Americans to know their rights. The video comes as a celebration of America’s 250th birthday, and ends with a message about how people have sacrificed their own rights to make sure people can have future ones.
Bob Odenkirk’s surprise return as Saul Goodman was a nice moment for fans
In typical Saul Goodman fashion, the PSA is filmed at his desk, which features the U.S. Constitution behind him in wallpaper form. He jokes that people have rights thanks to “a bunch of guys in powdered wigs and knee socks,” and then runs through the list of amendments in the U.S. as if it were the fine print of a commercial.
The return even features a cameo from fan-favorite Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), who approves the message at the end. Peter Gould, the co-creator of Better Call Saul alongside Vince Gilligan, confirmed the return of Odenkirk, and also confirmed the video was not made with AI in any way.
For fans of both Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, it was the perfect combination. Not only was it nice to see Odenkirk and Banks return, but they did so without the use of any AI or de-aging techniques. Instead, it was simply just an older Odenkirk stepping back into the role, and playfully getting in on the fun of returning as Goodman. Better yet, the PSA doesn’t needlessly mentioning any of the existing story of both shows.
A commercial for what is essentially the USA’s birthday is also a perfect fit for the return of Goodman. Throughout Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, Goodman’s character opines on the freedoms of America and uses said freedoms to do many things that aren’t quite on the up and up.
