1 Hit Star Wars Show Was Meant To Be a Movie Like Mandalorian & Grogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu may be the first theatrical outing for Star Wars in seven years, but, according to new Lucasfilm boss Dave Filoni, there is one spin-off series that could’ve received the big-screen treatment a bit earlier. While talking about the future of the beloved sci-fi franchise, the Clone Wars director revealed that he originally wanted 2023’s Ahsoka series to be a movie.

During the much-awaited premiere of The Mandalorian and Grogu, the Lucasfilm President inadvertently disclosed that he had initially envisioned the Rosario Dawson-led Ahsoka spin-off to be a feature-length film.

The conversation started when a News18 Showsha reporter asked Dave Filoni whether the immediate future of Star Wars would feature more movies than TV shows. In response, he noted, “We’ll see, I mean, obviously we needed both.”

The veteran filmmaker then explained his statement and unintentionally divulged that he had conceptualized Ahsoka as a movie before switching to an episodic format. “I love what I’ve been able to do,” Filoni said, adding, “I couldn’t figure out how to make Ahsoka into a film, way back when, even before I started working with Jon [Favreau]. So after working with Jon, I’m like, ‘Oh, I get it, it’s a series.’ And so some stories work better for that, and some stories are movies, and I think we need it all. I think it’s all part of what drives the big ecosystem that is Star Wars.”

The Star Wars spin-off, revolving around the escapades of Anakin Skywalker’s titular Padawan after the events of Return of the Jedi, ultimately premiered in 2023 with an eight-episode season.

The series garnered an impressive 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Disney also sanctioning a follow-up edition. While Ahsoka Season 2 does not have an official release date as of yet, Dawson has confirmed that it will premiere sometime in early 2027.
