Hijack Season 2 finale answers several lingering questions about the conspiracy surrounding Sam Nelson and the fate of key characters. Ahead of the episode’s release, showrunner Jim Field Smith discussed the final twist involving Sam’s son Kai and clarified what happens to John Bailey-Brown during the climactic train explosion.

Jim Field Smith answers if John Bailey-Brown died in Hijack Season 2 ending
John Bailey-Brown does not survive the Hijack Season 2 finale. The final episode shows the train exploding after Otto, Sam Nelson, and Lang escape beforehand. Meanwhile, Bailey-Brown remains handcuffed inside the carriage and cannot get off before the blast.
Writer Jim Field Smith confirmed the character’s fate when discussing the ending with Variety. He said, “Anybody who was on that train would not have survived.” Otto and Sam get off the train before the explosion, while Bailey-Brown remains handcuffed inside the carriage when it detonates.
Smith reveals the real killer of Kai besides Stuart in Hijack Season 2
The Hijack Season 2 finale also reveals that John Bailey-Brown did not kill Sam Nelson’s son Kai. Instead, the story exposes Stuart Atterton as the mastermind behind both the Berlin U-Bahn hijacking and Kai’s killing.
Smith explained the circumstances of the death during an interview with TV Insider, revealing that Stuart ordered the attack after Sam began investigating the original hijacking. He said, “Stuart orders Kai to be killed probably by Lang or Lang probably helped organize it for sure.”
The revelation shows that the perpetrators deliberately orchestrated the hit-and-run that killed Kai rather than causing it accidentally. Smith said they carried out the killing as a warning. They later used it as leverage against Sam as part of the larger scheme behind the train hijacking.
During the finale, the train explosion ends the immediate crisis after passengers escape and key characters flee before the detonation. Sam and Otto leave the train in time, while Bailey-Brown remains handcuffed inside and dies, leaving Stuart and Lang directly tied to the plot involving Kai.
