Grace Van Patten reflected on Lucy and Stephen’s future following the Tell Me Lies finale. The actor addressed where the characters stand after the final episode and what their last moments could mean moving forward.
Grace Van Patten hopes Lucy is ‘completely done’ with Stephen after Tell Me Lies finale
In an interview with Collider, Grace Van Patten said she hopes Lucy is “completely done” with Stephen after the Tell Me Lies finale. Reflecting on the final gas station scene, she said, “I love the ending so much. I love how predictable it is that he left her again. I love the reaction to it because, for the first time, there’s a relief in it, as opposed to being destroyed by it. It’s the first time you see Lucy take it as a sign. It feels like she might be completely done.”
Season 3 ends with Lucy leaving a chaotic wedding with Stephen, only for him to abandon her again. Van Patten described Stephen as “a supervillain” and added, “Those guys always think they’re winning. It’s more like, ‘Thank you for showing me one more time how much of a piece of shit you are. Thank you, and goodnight.’”
Discussing Stephen’s behavior, Van Patten said, “He’s a sociopath.” She also stated, “His is really hard to justify,” adding, “You understand it, but it also doesn’t justify it.” She noted, “And he doesn’t face any consequences, so he’s not forced to reevaluate anything.”
Van Patten addressed Lucy’s state of mind throughout the final season, saying, “In general, Lucy is in a very dark place this season, so there weren’t a lot of moments of levity.” She explained Lucy’s reaction to her expulsion by saying, “There’s absolutely some heavy denial going on and some disassociation. I don’t think she’s taking anything in. Life is in slow motion for her, at that point.”
When asked about the group’s future, she said, “It’s crazy to think about because the whole group is shattered now.” She added, “Stephen is not going to be friends with any of these people. There’s maybe Lucy and Pippa.”
