Stranger Things doc reveals why Finn Wolfhard didn’t get to use a gun in the finale
In the documentary, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, Matt Duffer revealed that Finn Wolfhard and the other kids in Stranger Things’ cast asked for their characters to take part in the final fight, which he agreed with. He also pointed out that the Ghostbusters: Afterlife actor pleaded with him not to give him a candlestick, which Duffer noted was “fair.” Mike’s use of a candlestick, an impractical weapon against the Upside Down monsters, has become a running joke within the series.
“He really wants a gun, and I’m just like ‘I don’t think so,'” Duffer added. Following this, series writers said “no” twice off-camera, hammering home the reality of Mike losing his innocence if he picked up a gun.
Meanwhile, One Last Adventure’s director, Martina Radwan, also shared her thoughts on Mike not using a gun. Speaking to Variety, she said that Mike not having a gun “made sense” to her. Radwan emphasized that if Mike picked up a gun, he would lose his innocence and no longer be the “nerdy kid that plays D&D.”
As viewers know from the finale, Mike Wheeler pleads with Nancy to give him a gun, prompting her to give him a flare gun. The former’s initial excitement at getting a firearm dwindles after Lucas points out that it’s only a flare gun.
One Last Adventure and all five seasons of Stranger Things are currently streaming on Netflix. The Duffer Brothers co-created the series and also served as executive producers alongside Shawn Levy, Iain Paterson, and Curtis Gwinn.
In addition to Wolfhard, Stranger Things’ cast includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, and Noah Schnapp, among others.
