3 Body Problem Season 2 Update Given by Creator: ‘Really Wild in the Best Possible Way’

3 Body Problem co-creator D.B. Weiss — during Deadline’s Contenders TV event — discussed the Netflix adaptation of the award-winning novel and the creative challenges they are set to face for Season 2.

Since author Liu Cixin wrote multiple The Three-Body Problem sequels, the television series is also expected to continue the story for more seasons. However, for Weiss, there are plenty of things to consider.

“This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss told Deadline. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”

Weiss also explained their process of incorporating scientific concepts into the series, which the author successfully explained in the books.

“You don’t want people to be pushing pause and hitting Wikipedia every five minutes. You could do the version of that that makes people do that but it pulls people out of it. In the book, he’s explaining all this stuff to you anyway in writing. It was a challenge that was ultimately what drew us to the project to begin with,” Weiss added.

What is 3 Body Problem about?

The eight-episode sci-fi television series, which premiered on March 21, 2024, follows astrophysicist Ye Wenjie (Rosalind Chao), whose critical decision back in the 1960s caused consequences for humanity in the present day.

“Across continents and decades, five brilliant friends make earth-shattering discoveries as the laws of science unravel and an existential threat emerges,” the logline reads.

3 Body Problem features talented cast members, including Chao, Jovan Adepo as Dr. Saul Durand, John Bradley as Jack Rooney, Liam Cunningham as Thomas Wade, Eiza González as Auggie, Jess Hong as Jin Cheng, and Marlo Kelly as Tatiana Haas, among others.
