Will Nickelodeon be broadcasting the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show?
Variety has reported that at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, it was announced that Nickelodeon obtained the rights to all 193 episodes the 1987 cartoon. The show will premiere digitally in the United States on Nickelodeon later this month, then will be broadcast on Nickelodeon-branded channels and digital platforms internationally in the future.
The 1987 series was based on the characters from Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, though the series had a decidedly more kid-friendly tone than the source material. The show was a massive hit, spawning countless types of merchandise that ranged from toys to themed food. In the years since, multiple other Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shows and movies have been made.
The newest movie from the franchise — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem — set to release in theaters on August 2. The official synopsis for the film reads, “After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a notorious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”
