Planet of the Apes Disney+ TV Show Reportedly in Development

A TV series based on the Planet of the Apes is currently in development for Disney Plus, according to a recent report from Giant Freakin Robot.

When is the Planet of the Apes TV show coming out?

The report notes that the series is currently shrouded in mystery, and as of this point its spot on the timeline of the Planet of the Apes franchise is unknown. However, with a new film on the horizon, the report notes that it’s possible that the series will run concurrent with the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie, depending on how fast the project gets made.

Also mentioned in the report is the fact that the series is reportedly being made with Disney Plus in mind. Usually, most Disney-owned 20th Century Fox projects made for adults find their to Hulu, but with the latest trilogy of Planet of the Apes movies all landing PG-13 ratings, it’s possible that this new show will also be on the tamer side and not require a more restrictive rating.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is currently in production. The sequel film will star William H. Macy, Owen Teague, Freya Allen, Dichen Lachman, and Peter Macon, among others. The movie is set “many years” following the events of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. After Caesar brought his people to an oasis, new ape societies have grown while humans have been reduced to a more “feral-like existence.”

“Some groups have never heard of Caesar, while others have contorted his teaching to build burgeoning empires,” reads the description of the film. “In this setting, one ape leader begins to enslave other groups to find human technology, while another ape, who watched his clan be taken, embarks on a journey to find freedom. A young human woman becomes key to latter’s quest, although she has plans of her own.”
