Tim Roth Talks Abomination’s MCU Return in Shang-Chi and She-Hulk

Tim Roth Discusses Abomination’s ‘New’ Look, Returning to MCU for His Kids

Tim Roth is set to return again to the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe later this year, where he’ll reprise his role as Emil Blonsky/Abomination in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Speaking to ComingSoon about it, Roth spoke about the changes to the creature Abomination and more.

“The ‘new’ look … it’s so funny, because when I saw it, it was like, ‘oh,’ because it’s closer to the actual comic books,” said Roth when asked how he felt about seeing the new version of Abomination in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. “It’s closer to how he was. Originally he was underwater. He could breathe underwater, he had gills. All of that stuff was [a] very interesting mix of monster and human. I thought that was fascinating. It was something we didn’t put into the first movie. So the makeover is … I don’t know if it’s changed from the recent film [Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings] to the She-Hulk, it may have even evolved a little bit from there. I’m not sure. I’m not sure what they’ve done. They’re still working on it.”

Roth also spoke about the recent wave of support he received after appearing in Shang-Chi, saying he was “flattered” by the outpouring of love by the fans after Abomination appeared briefly in a fight scene against none other than Benedict Wong’s Wong.

“I was quite flattered,” Roth said. “I thought it was really nice, you know? When they asked me if I would consider coming back and playing that role, I was like, ‘Yeah!’ I did it for my kids. It’s the reason I did it at the beginning, and [it’s] still the same. I told them about it and they went, ‘Oh, you’re doing this.’ Okay, I’m doing this. That happens quite often. It happened with Resurrection. My son read the script and said, ‘You’re doing this.’ Okay. And I had no say in the matter. I’m so glad I did. I took his advice.”

Roth also praised Tatiana Maslany, who stars in the series as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk, as well as Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner, in the upcoming series, and noted that he had seen the recently released San Diego Comic-Con trailer and loved it.

“I don’t normally watch stuff, but I did watch the trailer, because my kids said to me, ‘You’ve got to watch this trailer. It’s a great trailer.’ So I watched the Marvel trailer,” said Roth. “I loved the woman that was playing the lead in it. She’s extraordinary. Mark Ruffalo is hilarious too. So we had a lot of fun.”
