How to Watch Black Bird on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ recently amped up its library of true crime series with a brilliant addition — Black Bird, a haunting drama depicting the true story of Jimmy Keene and serial killer Larry Hall. The limited miniseries is based on Keene’s chilling memoir In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption.

The ongoing series on the streamer picks up the story at the time when Keene was a star footballer in high school but ended up getting tangled in drug dealing and was sentenced to ten years in jail. The FBI offered him a deal to lessen his punishment — use his charming ways to befriend the dangerously unhinged serial killer Larry Hall to make the latter confess to his crimes.

The series spins an engrossing and hair-raising story that narrates the perilous reality of Keene, who had to befriend a man suspected of killing more than 40 women and girls.

What Are the Critics Saying about Black Bird?

Critics have nothing but glowing reviews for the true crime series. Black Bird has a highly positive approval rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 64 critics’ reviews and a 94% audience score aggregated from 81 reviews from viewers.

Most reviews have pointed out how the excellent performances further amp up the impressive adaptation of the true story. Amanda Whiting of Independent particularly loved Taron Egerton as Jimmy Keene as he gives “an astonishingly consistent performance.” “A muscular and conspicuously tanned Egerton plays Jimmy with a nasal twang and a superiority complex that fits like an expensive suit.”

“This is a tense true-crime story told with immense confidence and care — but it’s the performances, especially from Paul Walter Hauser and Ray Liotta, that really make Black Bird sing,” writes John Nugent, Empire Magazine.
