The Walking Dead Daryl Spin-Off Gets New Showrunner After Angela Kang Exits

Nearly a week after Melissa McBride’s surprising exit from AMC’s previously announced Daryl and Carol-centered spin-off, Deadline brings word that the untitled project has experienced another pre-production setback.

Angela Kang is officially exiting as the showrunner for the Norman Reedus-led horror drama. The outlet notes that her exit is due to Kang wanting to shift her focus on other AMC projects and that this move was done before McBride’s decision to leave. Kang will be replaced by David Zabel (ER) as the new showrunner, while the long-time Walking Dead showrunner will remain as an executive producer on the project.

Norman Reedus and McBride are the only original surviving characters from the first season. In 2020, it was announced that the fan-favorite duo will be starring in their own The Walking Dead spin-off following the conclusion of the main series’ 11-season run. AMC noted the reason was due to the fact that the series will be set and filmed in Europe, and that relocating there for the summer became “logistically untenable” for the star.

The Daryl spin-off series is just one of many planned series set to be based on The Walking Dead, with a spin-off focused on Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan and Lauren Cohan’s Maggie also in the works. The episodic anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead, as well as the ongoing Fear the Walking Dead, are also still on AMC’s plate going forward.
