Babylon 5 Reboot in the Works at The CW From J. Michael Straczynski

After more than 20 years since Babylon 5 had concluded its five-season run, Deadline brings word that The CW is currently in the process of developing a reboot of the acclaimed ’90s space opera series. The Babylon 5 reboot hails from original creator J. Michael Straczynski, who will once again serve as a writer.

Described as a “from-the-ground-up-reboot,” the new adaptation will be executive produced by Straczynski through his Studio JMS banner. In addition to the Babylon 5, he is also known for his work on Netflix’s hit sci-fi series Sense8, with co-creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski. The series is a production by Warner Bros. Television.

“The reboot will center around John Sheridan, an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, who is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war,” reads the synopsis. “His arrival triggers a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last, best hope for the survival of the human race.”

The original series had ran on-air for five 22-episode seasons from 1994 to 1998. It was the first series that was able to introduce a five-year concept arc to viewers. It starred Bruce Boxleitner, Michael O’Hare, Claudia Christian, Jerry Doyle, Mira Furlan, Richard Biggs, Andrea Thompson, and more.
