It has been over a month since it was first announced that Emilia Clarke has officially joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion series, and now the Game of Thrones alum has finally opened up about her major casting by revealing the reason why she decided to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking with Comic Book, Clarke shared that her admiration to the franchise and the people behind the project were the major deciding factors that really drew her into signing on to the upcoming Disney+ series.
“I just think what they’re doing right now is so exciting and so cool, and so on the cutting edge of it. I feel like they’re like the Apple of this world,” Clarke explained. “To be part of that family feels like, ‘Oh my god, I’m in the cool kid crowd. That’s so cool.’ Honestly speaking, the people that are making this are what pushed me over the line to really wanting to do it. I just think that everyone’s heart and heads are in the right place with this one.”
The announcement of the acclaimed actress’ casting definitely leveled up the hype surrounding Secret Invasion, especially due to the circulating theories about the undisclosed character that is set to portray. Some fans are speculating that she might potentially take on the role of S.W.O.R.D director Abigail Brand, while others are convinced that she might play Veranka, who is the Skrull Queen in the comics.
Based on Brian Michael Bendis, Leinil Francis Yu, Mark Morales, and Laura Martin’s comic book series, Disney+’s Secret Invasion series will be led by MCU mainstay Samuel L. Jackson as he reprises his role as Nick Fury for the twelfth time since first portraying the character in 2008’s Iron Man. He will be teaming up with Captain Marvel‘s Ben Mendelsohn, who is returning as Talos, the pseudo-leader of the Skrulls.
Joining them are MCU newcomers Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night in Miami) as the series’ main villain, Oscar winner Olivia Colman (The Crown), Emmy nominee Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Killian Scott (Dublin Murders), and Christopher McDonald (Happy Gilmore), with Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts) recently rumored to be in negotiations to join the series.
Marvel Comics’ eight-part limited crossover series centered on a subversive, long-term invasion of Earth by the Skrulls, a group of alien shapeshifters who have secretly replaced many superheroes in the Marvel Universe with impostors over a period of years, prior to the over the invasion.
Secret Invasion is executive produced by Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot), with Let Him Go director Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim (The Looming Tower) set as directors. Production on the series is expected to begin later this year in Europe.
The project was first announced along with a slew of other MCU projects for Disney+ last December during Disney’s Investors Day. Following the success of WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios is now preparing for the upcoming premiere of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki next Wednesday. Upcoming Disney+ shows for the studio include: What If?, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Armor Wars, Ironheart and more.
