Per the Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max’s Green Lantern has found its Alan Scott. Jeremy Irvine (Treadstone) will play the iconic comic book hero, who is one of the most high-profile gay characters in all of comics. However, the character being gay is a more recent development. Scott was introduced to be gay in 2012 and to have a boyfriend named Sam Zhao.

The first character to bear the name Green Lantern, Scott made his debut in 1940. Scott was the primary Green Lantern until the comic was canceled after the Golden Age of Comic Books. DC chose to go a different route as Hal Jordan took over the mantle, but Scott would be re-introduced with the explanation that Scott was on Earth-Two, an alternate universe, while Jordan was on Earth-One.

Since the current incarnation was conceived as being gay, the Hollywood Reporter expects that to follow suit in the upcoming HBO Max show. Several Green Lanterns are set to appear in the series, including Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner, which will span 10 episodes. The show will be written and executive produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim (Arrow) with Grahame-Smith also set as the showrunner. Executive producers are Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter, David Madden, David Katzenberg, Elizabeth Hunter and Sara Saedi.

Green Lantern’s first live-action adaptation was Martin Campbell’s 2011 film where it starred Ryan Reynolds as the titular hero. However, the film was poorly received by critics and fans and was a box-office failure after only bringing in just $220 million worldwide on a $200 million budget.

Berlanti is also an executive producer on The FlashSupergirlDC’s Legends of TomorrowBatwoman, and Black Lightning for The CW. For DC Universe, he produces TitansDoom Patrol, and Stargirl.
