Big Finish Productions revealed that the 12 full-cast audio adventures will be released across four box sets, with the first volume set to release in May 2021, and will see the reunion of Eccleston and Big Finish’s creative director Nicholas Briggs, who he worked with in his sole season of the sci-fi series.

After 15 years, it will be exciting to revisit the Ninth Doctor’s world, bringing back to life a character I love playing,” Eccleston said in a statement. “Working with Chris was a very special time for me. The beginning of my Doctor Who TV career. So, writing for and directing him feels incredibly exciting. He’s such a powerful performer and it’ll be amazing to work with him again.

Though story details, writers and guest cast are currently being kept under wraps by the studios, they do promise the series will be “the trip of a lifetime.” Eccleston left the series after his sole season in 2005, with things getting heated between the BBC and the star over behind-the-scenes disputes and differences in reporting of his contract and time on set and skipped out on returning for the 50th anniversary special in 2013, despite being offered a major part.
