Netflix’s Space Force, one of the service’s newest comedies, has Steve Carell as recently promoted four-star general Mark Naird, who is tasked with leading the U.S. Space Force. In Space Force Season 1 Episode 1, Gen. Naird oversaw a launch of a satellite, Epsilon 6, and in Space Force Season 1 Episode 2, he must save Epsilon 6 after the Chinese sabotaged it.

After his promotion, Gen. Naird expected to head the Air Force but learned that he would oversee the newly created Space Force instead. A year later, the Space Force geared up for its launch of Epsilon 6, for which several Senators would be in attendance. However, all the scientists told Naird that conditions were unfavorable for the launch and recommended that he postpone it. Feeling the pressure of a smooth launch, Naird went ahead with the launch anyway. Fortunately, the launch was a success.

Unfortunately, the Chinese damaged Epsilon 6, and Naird looked to the scientists for ideas on how to fix it. After shooting down some good, science-based ideas, he went with using the animals onboard. Marcus, a chimp, and Theodore, a dog, were sent to space to capture cute footage, but there was never any plan to bring them back.

Communicating through sign language from Dr. Mallory, Naird guided Marcus on a space walk to repair the satellite. However, the drill went haywire, and Marcus drifted away from Epsilon 6 toward the Chinese satellite. He boarded it, making him the first Space Force POW. Naird’s dismay over losing Marcus to the Chinese was tempered by the knowledge that Marcus had eaten Theodore, the first Space Force casualty. Unfortunately, the mishap with Marcus made other viable ideas impossible.

Since Naird’s promotion, we learned that his wife, Maggie, went to prison. She encouraged Naird to be with other people while she was locked up, but he refused. With Maggie away, Naird relied on a caretaker to help his elderly parents.

Meanwhile, Naird’s daughter, Erin, was seeing Yuri, a Russian working with Space Force who appeared to have high-level authority. Episode 2 followed Erin’s struggle with her trig homework while Naird was working to save Epsilon 6. Despite a long day, Naird sat down with her to help.
