Catch-22 Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

Catch-22 Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

In the previous episode of Hulu’s Catch-22, Nately died before he could propose to Clara. In Catch-22 Season 1 Episode 5, YoYo wanted to go to Rome to tell Clara.

Permission Denied

Cathcart and Korn admonished YoYo for needing to turn back during the mission. However, Korn pointed out that punishing him would send the wrong message about the mission’s success. Cathcart agreed to give YoYo a medal for his courage. However, when YoYo asked for leave to see Clara in Rome, Cathcart denied permission. Yossarian went looking for Milo, who was away in Spain. Two of the Italian boys working for M&M flew YoYo to Rome.

At the house in Rome, Aarfy was there on leave. YoYo dropped off his things and headed for the brothel. The place was dark and empty. YoYo found Clara’s sister, Ines, on the street, and she didn’t know where Clara was. YoYo gave Ines the ring meant for Clara. Ines thought he wanted a sexual favor for it, but he told her to keep it.

On the way back, after running into a group of men beating a dog, YoYo saw a crowd surrounding Michaela dead on the cobblestones. Yossarian quickly realized that Aarfy had raped her and thrown her out of the window. When the MPs came, YoYo thought they were there to arrest Aarfy, but they arrested him instead for going on leave without permission.

Balancing the Books

Catch-22 Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

The MPs had locked Yossarian up in a bunker. Cathcart and Korn came to see him to impress on him how bad the things he was saying about Aarfy would reflect on the US Army. They offered to discharge YoYo if he kept his mouth shut.

The two Italian boys found YoYo and brought Milo. They were in a “Green Zone”, and they all had to get out of there. Cathcart realized what Milo meant, and as they frantically drove away, the Germans bombed the airfield. Milo explained it was part of a deal for the syndicate, and they would be attacking them in return soon. He reminded YoYo that he too was part of the syndicate and wanted him to be a partner now and after they went home.

The Mediterranean Theater

Catch-22 Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

As the men were cleaning up the airfield, General Scheisskopf landed. He was now in charge of the entire Mediterranean theater and would be based on Pianosa. Upon hearing that Scheisskopf was there, Yossarian found Korn, whose office was being cleaned out around him. Korn had YoYo’s discharge papers ready, and they only needed Cathcart’s signature. Unfortunately, he asked for it in front of Scheisskopf. Since YoYo hadn’t flown the current mission quota of 55, he ripped up YoYo’s discharge papers, despite whatever deal they had in place. He hinted that he knew YoYo was sleeping with his wife.

While YoYo was on his next mission, he got hit and believed he lost his testicles. Both engines were failing, and YoYo and Aarfy abandoned the plane. Orr, who was piloting, didn’t jump.
