Snapped: Killer Couples: What Were Amanda Noverr and Adam Williams Convicted Of?

The upcoming episode of Snapped: Killer Couples, titled “Amanda Noverr and Adam Williams,” will air on Oxygen this Sunday, March 31, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET. It will look into the disappearance and murder of James and Michelle Butler and the conviction of Amanda Noverr and Adam Williams that followed.

Amanda Noverr and Adam Williams were convicted of the murder of James and Michelle Butler after both of them pleaded guilty in court as part of a plea deal. The court also convicted them of multiple felonies, including theft and tampering with evidence.

According to WMUR, family members reported James and Michelle Butler missing in October 2018. The couple was on a cross-country trip and were on their way to Florida, where they had planned to sell Christmas trees. The couple last contacted Michelle’s son over a phone call on October 15. That day, as per her Facebook post, the couple made it to Padre Island. They sent their final text message to their friend on October 16 at 1:13 ET. Later, Amanda Noverr and Adam Williams took their truck across the southern border into Mexico.

The family filed the report after the couple missed a scheduled call with them. Later, authorities found the bodies of the couple in a shallow grave on Kelberg Beach on October 27, 2019. A homicide investigation began, and the police found surveillance footage that detected the couple’s truck crossing the Mexican border. Authorities then identified Adam Williams as the man driving the truck and made his name public on November 5. The next day, Williams and Amanda Noverr were arrested in Mexico and charged with theft.

How many years were Amanda Noverr and Adam Williams sentenced to?

In 2020, authorities also charged them with capital murder and tampering with evidence concerning the burial of the victims’ remains. Amanda Noverr received a 20-year sentence, while Adam Williams got life imprisonment. KIII-TV reported that Williams’ plea deal spared him from the death penalty, while Noverr received a lighter sentence. Noverr entered her plea three months after Williams received his sentence of life imprisonment with no chance of parole.

James and Michelle were 48 and 45, respectively, at the time of death. The couple reportedly rented out their home in New Hampshire and decided to travel across the country in an RV. This was after James quit his job at Walmart and Michelle resigned from her office job. They traveled to New York and Arizona before going to South Texas, as per the New York Times. Their daughter-in-law, Caitlin Roth, reported them missing before Amanda Noverr and Adam Williams were caught.

Noverr and Williams were 33 at the time of the homicide. According to CBS News, they were also charged with the theft of the Butlers’ lawnmower, which was worth over $30,000.
