Bad Romance on ABC: What Happened to Heather Elvis?

ABC’s Bad Romance, a special edition of 20/20, will look into the disappearance of Heather Elvis in December 2013. The upcoming episode “No Trace” will air on the network this Monday, January 29, 2024, at 10 p.m. ET. An official synopsis says, “A twisted love triangle between a husband, a wife, and a young bar hostess results in a disappearance.”

The New York Post reported that Elvis, who worked at a Myrtle Beach pub called the Tilted Kilt, mysteriously vanished in December 2013. Before her disappearance, she had an affair with a married father-of-two, Sidney Moorer. The affair ended after Sidney’s wife, Tammy Moorer, found out about it in October of that year. After this, Tammy began harassing Elvis with calls and messages.

Heather Elvis disappeared in the early morning hours of December 18, 2013, and remains missing even today. Her abandoned car was discovered at Peachtree Boat Landing the following day. Authorities later arrested Sidney and Tammy Moorer in connection with the disappearance based on phone records and surveillance footage. They both faced conviction on kidnapping and other charges in separate, delayed trials.

How were Sidney and Tammy Moorer linked to Heather Elvis’ disappearance?

According to NBC News, the Horry County Solicitor’s Office alleged that Tammy Moorer was enraged after learning of her husband Sidney Moorer’s affair with Heather Elvis. Moreover, Elvis’ friends claimed that the missing woman was concerned she was pregnant and had even texted Sidney about gaining weight. Allegations further suggested that the Moorers conspired to lure Heather to a boat landing where they abducted her.

New York Post reported that in the early morning of December 18, 2013, Elvis told her roommate about receiving a disturbing call from Sidney. In the call, “He said that he left his wife, that he missed her and wanted to see her and be with her.” She reportedly drove to Peachtree Boat Landing sometime after 3 a.m. Her car was discovered at South Carolina’s Peachtree Boat Landing the following day.

The outlet reported that surveillance footage captured a vehicle similar to Sidney’s going from the Moorer home to the boat landing. The footage also captured the vehicle returning from the boat landing to the house. Authorities also used surveillance cameras to place Sidney on a pay phone from where he made a call to Elvis before she disappeared. Other footage also captured him buying a pregnancy test that night, which he claimed was for his wife.

Phone records showed that Heather had received calls first from a payphone that night. The records also revealed that she had returned multiple calls to the same payphone. Sidney initially denied the payphone call allegations but later admitted to calling Heather. However, he told police that he called her and “‘asked her to please leave me alone,'” per ABC7.

On February 21, 2014, authorities arrested Sidney and Tammy Moorer in connection with Heather Elvis’ disappearance. They initially charged them with murder and kidnapping but later dropped the murder charges.

After years of complications and delay, Sidney Moorer stood trial in 2016. But, the proceedings ended with a hung jury. Following this, in October 2018, a jury found Tammy Moorer guilty of kidnapping and conspiracy to kidnap. She received a 30-year prison term on each count to run concurrently.

In 2019, prosecutors retried Sidney, and a jury convicted him of kidnapping and conspiracy to kidnap. He received a similar sentence and an additional 10-year term, which he received in August 2017 for obstructing a police investigation, reported ABC 7.

Bad Romance on ABC will investigate Heather Elvis’ mysterious disappearance on January 29, 2024.
