CBS 48 Hours: What Was Megan Parra’s Cause of Death?

On June 28, 2014, Megan Parra’s parents discovered the body of the 29-year-old in Cottonport, Louisiana. Initially, authorities believed that Parra took her own life. However, several years after this tragedy, they arrested the victim’s husband, Dustin Parra, and charged him with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.

According to CBS News, Megan Parra died from a gunshot wound to the head. Her husband faced charges for his wife’s death for the first time in October 2021. On March 24, 2023, just three days before Dustin’s murder trial was set to start, his attorney proposed a deal. After having a conversation with the district attorney, Megan’s parents, Steve and Missy Ducote, accepted the deal.

CBS News reported that Dustin accepted that he had a gun with him during a struggle with Megan. It went off, which ultimately led to his wife’s death.

This heartbreaking case was showcased in the latest episode of CBS 48 Hours. Titled “The Suspicious Death of Megan Parra.” The synopsis of the episode reads, “When a mother of two is found dead in her home, her father obtains death scene photos that help solve the case. “48 Hours” contributor David Begnaud reports.”

CBS 48 Hours: Where is Megan Parra’s husband Dustin Parra now?

Dustin Parra received a five-year prison sentence and according to the Louisiana Department of Corrections, he is at the Dixon Correctional Institute. Furthermore, CBS News reported that he will probably serve only 18 months in prison and the rest on parole.

The indictment Dustin received in October 2021 said, “[Dustin] did intentionally discharge a firearm at or near Megan Parra with the intent to kill or commit great bodily harm.”

Furthermore, after Dustin admitted his role in his wife’s death, Steve Ducote said, “To us, as a family, him admitting to that, that was huge.”

Megan and Dustin’s sons were previously living with their father after their mother’s passing. However, following a court petition, Steve and Missy Ducote currently have full custody of their grandchildren.
