Oxygen’s Final Moments: Who Was the Suspect in Ricardo Hibi’s Stabbing Death?

Final Moments on Oxygen will delve into Winnipeg group home manager Ricardo Hibi’s stabbing death in December 2018. The episode, titled “Death at the Front Door,” airs on the network this Sunday, December 17, 2023, at 7 p.m. ET.

An official synopsis states, “Ricardo Hibi overcame a tough childhood to become a successful businessman and family man; he opens a group home to give troubled kids the same chance at success; when he’s found stabbed to death, police must determine why someone would target him.”

Hibi died outside his boys foster home in Winnipeg’s Daniel McIntyre after a man stabbed him on December 17, 2018. Surveillance video showed the killer wearing a black North Face winter jacket as he walked up to the house. As per CTV News, the same video, among other evidence, linked Kane Moar to the crime. Moar had a criminal background and was on parole at the time. He was also facing charges related to a death inside Stony Mountain Institution.

According to CTV News, Ricardo Hibi had set up multiple CCTV cameras outside and inside the foster home. Footage from one of these cameras showed a man wearing a black jacket walking up the house. Another video captured the moments of Hibi’s death after he answered the door around 2:30 pm on December 17, 2018. A witness claimed she was on the phone with the victim when he died and heard him say, “Hey man this isn’t your house, get out of my house.”

CBC reported that police initially arrested Hibi’s killer, Kane Moar, under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act in January 2019. However, he attempted to identify himself as someone else, but authorities realized his true identity shortly after.

Moar was reportedly wearing a black North Face winter jacket. The Crown later alleged that he stabbed Hibi three times, puncturing his heart, when the foster home manager refused to let him into the house. Moreover, at the time of the stabbing, the 34-year-old victim was engaged to his fiancé Candace Woloshyn.

RCMP forensic specialist Marie-Eve Bonicalzi analyzed samples taken from the jacket and revealed that “the profile was consistent with matching two individuals.” There was blood on the left sleeve of the jacket which matched with Hibi’s DNA. Meanwhile, blood and hair found the same piece of clothing matched Moar’s DNA.

A second CTV News report confirmed that Moar was on parole and facing charges related to a Stony Mountain Institution inmate’s murder when he committed the crime. Prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder in Ricardo Hibi’s stabbing death. He pleaded not guilty.

In September 2020, a jury found the accused guilty of the count, which carries an automatic life sentence with parole after 10 to 25 years. Justice Vic Toews settled on parole after 15 years, calling the convict’s actions brutal and unprovoked. Toews reportedly said, “He [Moar] remains a high risk to reoffend violently.”

Elsewhere, Hibi’s fiancé Candace Woloshyn addressed the killer’s sentence, saying, “15’s better than 10.” But he hopes that he gets a true-life sentence, “With his criminal background and record, he’s going to get in trouble again in there, especially when he’s already done it before.”

Oxygen’s Final moments airs with Ricardo Hibi’s stabbing death case on Sunday, December 17, 2023.
