The authorities initiated the investigation, and it took almost four years to indict Nancy Brophy in the murder case of her husband, Daniel Brophy. On June 2, 2018, Daniel Brophy, a teacher at the Oregon Culinary Institute, went to work. Later, students arrived and discovered his body in a kitchen, where he had succumbed to two gunshots. The autopsy revealed that someone shot Daniel once in the back and then in the chest. The police initiated the investigation and later suspected that Nancy Brophy, his wife, might have killed Daniel.
After a thorough investigation, authorities arrested Nancy in September 2018 and charged her with second-degree murder. She pleaded not guilty. The trial began in April 2022, and prosecutors claimed that Nancy Crampton Brophy stood to gain a significant amount of life insurance money from her husband’s death. A surveillance video of Nancy’s vehicle was also presented at the trial, proving that she had been seen around the Culinary Institute on the date of the murder. Meanwhile, the prosecution also stated that Nancy researched guns and bought a Glock 17 handgun in Portland.
The trial gained significant public attention when it was revealed that Nancy Brophy had authored an online essay titled, How To Murder Your Husband. Nearly a month into the trial, the jury found Nancy Brophy guilty of second-degree murder, and on June 14, 2022, she received a life imprisonment sentence.
