In its upcoming episode, American Monster will revisit the case against David Sumney, who murdered his mother and clicked selfies with the body. The episode, titled “Spoiled to Death,” will air on Investigation Discovery this Sunday, November 12, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET.
The official synopsis for the upcoming episode says, “David Sumney Sr. and his wife, Margaret, devote their lives to spoiling their only son, David; however, everything comes at a price, and when his parents divorce, David Jr.’s anger escalates, resulting in the deadliest of sins.”
The New York Post stated that Sumney tortured and murdered his mother, Margaret, in the bathroom of her home in August 2019. He then documented the crime, clicking multiple selfies and pictures. The son secured a plea deal in August 2022, receiving a 20-year prison term. He is now serving time at the State Correctional Institution in Greene, as per prison records.

As per the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, David Sumney is currently serving his 20-year sentence at the State Correctional Institution in Greene. He received the minimum term after securing a plea deal last year in August.
People Magazine reported that Sumney told police he was not involved in the gruesome murder of his 67-year-old mother, Margaret, in August 2019. Detectives downloaded pictures from his phone as evidence to link him to the crime.
The outlet reported that the Pennsylvania man brutally beat his mother to death. He then dumped the victim’s body in the bathtub of her South Lafayette home. Following this, the killer took pictures and selfies of himself with the dead body.
Police found Margaret’s dead body on September 2, 2019, during a welfare check. Her family had requested one after failing to get in touch with the 67-year-old. Authorities found her bludgeoned and blood-covered body inside the bathtub of her house on Olde Orchard Drive.
Prosecutors reportedly dropped serious charges, such as first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse, in exchange for Sumney’s guilty plea. Instead, he pleaded guilty to third-degree murder for 20 to 40 years in prison. As it is, he can now become eligible for parole after serving 17 years of the term.
