How Healthy is Your Diet? Watch the Trailer for ‘That Sugar Film’

I have recently started building my diet around the Whole30 concept. I read Dallas and Melissa Hartwig‘s book and have been prepping the kitchen for the switch. Not because I necessarily need to lose weight (though there are a few lbs I’d like to shave), but because after talking to a friend and him telling me how much better he feels and sleeps, not to mention the waist trimming benefits, I figured I’d give it a twirl. Now the Whole30 way of eating means removing things like dairy, grains, soy and other items from your diet, but obviously one big contributing factory to unhealthy eating is sugar and man, it’s in everything.

I haven’t officially started the Whole30 program (not doing the full 30 days until the second week of August), but I’ve basically been eating as well as I can without the proper preparation — it isn’t easy. Other than a couple meals in the last week (and the fact Starbucks coconut milk is most definitely NOT coconut milk), I’ve been doing things such as eating zucchini noodles, lots of chicken and greens, making my own meatballs, making my own tomato sauce and chili (no beans though) and it’s been an interesting (and somewhat fun) ride. I mention all of this because a new documentary is coming to On Demand on July 31 called That Sugar Film and just below is the trailer.

Written and directed by Damon Gameau, the film shares a kinship with Morgan Spurlock‘s Super Size Me as Gameau, who’s been without sugar for three years has decided for the next 60 days he’ll eat a “healthy” diet… or so-called healthy diet. Here’s the studio provided synopsis:

THAT SUGAR FILM is one man’s journey to discover the bitter truth about sugar. Damon Gameau embarks on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, consuming only foods that are commonly perceived as ‘healthy’. Through this entertaining and informative journey, Damon highlights some of the issues that plague the sugar industry, and where sugar lurks on supermarket shelves. THAT SUGAR FILM will forever change the way you think about ‘healthy’ food.

That last line is interesting, reading the Hartwig’s “Whole30” book was enough to make me change the way I look at food and consider my diet so I guess I feel something of an understanding when it comes to what this doc is talking about.

Along with Gameau’s journey, the doc features appearances by Hugh Jackman, Stephen Fry, Brenton Thwaites, Isabel Lucas, Jessica Marais, Zoe Tuckwell-Smith, David Gillespie, Dr. Debbie Herbst, Sharon Johnston and Dr. Ken Sikaris. Check out the trailer below.
