Watch: Second Best Trailer for ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’

Alright, so admittedly the headline you see above is a bit of a fib: I haven’t yet watched a single trailer for the sequel to Fox Searchlight‘s 2012 breakout hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, so referring to it as “second best” isn’t exactly fair. However, it was a chance to draw attention to the partly-absurd, partly-witty title of the upcoming film, so why not live a little and just run with me here, yeah?

For those of you not in the know, yes, there is a sequel to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, yes, it is called The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and yes, it is hitting theaters very, very soon, March 6 to be precise. I’m not entirely sure the intent regarding the title, whether it is a riff on hotel owner Sonny Kapoor’s (Dev Patel) general lack of business knowledge — why would you refer to your next venture as “The Second Best” anything? — or if it was seen as a clever way of titling a sequel, by placing the series number before the main title instead of after, but either way, that’s the title and they are sticking to it. If you need a quick rundown of the plot, here you go:

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is the expansionist dream of Sonny Kapoor, and its making more claims on his time than he has available, considering his imminent marriage to the love of his life, Sunaina. Sonny has his eye on a promising property now that his first venture, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful, has only a single remaining vacancy posing a rooming predicament for fresh arrivals Guy and Lavinia.

John Madden — the filmmaker, not the football personality — is back in the director’s chair for this second go-round, and the cast includes Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Richard Gere, Judi Dench, Celia Imrie, Dev Patel, Tamsin Greig, David Strathairn and Penelope Wilton. The crew’s first outing was a sweet little movie, not great but not bad either, and I have a feeling we’ll probably get more of the same here as evidenced by what I saw of the new trailer below. If nothing else, it ought to play well on an airplane, which is where I saw the first film.
