Fox has released the first full trailer for Ridley Scott‘s epic Exodus: Gods and Kings starring Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses. It’s definitely going for the glossy, “this isn’t your father’s biblical epic” vibe complete with gold skirts, eyeliner, CGI and more eyeliner.
The film has already taken a large amount of heat for the lack of diversity among its principal cast members, which also includes Aaron Paul as Joshua, the leader of the Israelite tribes, Ben Kingsley as Nun the scholar and John Turturro and Sigourney Weaver as Ramses’ parents, Seti and Tuya. That scrutiny is likely to follow the film all the way to its December 12 release, but this one looks like it can be just as easily judged for its ethnic makeup as it can its literal makeup and just how stylized and over the top it appears.
I’ve slowly become less and less interested in Scott’s work as he churns out one film after another, but I would love to get back to that feeling of being excited for a new Ridley Scott release, perhaps my lowered expectations with this one will help that.
