“If we don’t stop him, it will be the end of mankind as we know it.”
At the end of the trailer for Transcendence (watch below) you hear Morgan Freeman say the words just above. However, you don’t see his mouth saying them. Why not? Well, according to director Wally Pfister, speaking at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention, it’s a line inserted by the Warner Bros. marketing team. Pfister says “that line is not in the movie” and, “I’d never write something like that.” Oddly enough, Pfister didn’t write the screenplay, Jack Paglen did, but I digress…
Personally my concerns before seeing this movie have less to do with that line of dialogue and more to do with the idea I feel I’ve seen this movie (or something quite similar) before, and hope Pfister has done something more than utilized today’s visual effects to “modernize” a scenario where a man’s consciousness is uploaded into a computer. Otherwise, a simple line of dialogue such as that will be the least of the overall product’s concerns.
To hear the dialogue for yourself, it comes at the very end of the trailer below. [TOH via The Playlist]
