Visually, I like what I’ve seen so far with Maleficent (5/30), but director Robert Stromberg is untested and given his long history in visual effects the movie had better be visually impressive. I also like the look of Angelina Jolie in the lead role, but for whatever reason I’m still a little hesitant in getting overly interested in this movie.
I feel we’ve been burned too many times with films that impress visually, but fail us narratively. Disney especially seems to have excelled at this with the likes of Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful. That said, is there anything a live-action version of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale can bring us the animated version didn’t? Will it be too beholden to the animated version and is the PG rating a sign Disney wanted to make sure this was tame enough for young audiences, which would leave adult audiences mildly satisfied, but won’t ultimately deliver for the more mature audience member.
Tonight a new banner and trailer for the film have arrived, give ’em a look and let me know what you think.
