Disney has released what they’re calling a “legacy” trailer for their upcoming live-action movie Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie, a movie that appears to bring all of their 1959 animated classic to life and then some.
I caught a trailer for this in front of my screening of Muppets Most Wanted on Saturday and visually I really liked what I was seeing, but I felt there was something just a little off about it that I couldn’t quite place my finger on. It may be my knowledge of the synopsis compared to what I remember about the animated movie. The synopsis says Maleficent was once the land’s protector, but is eventually betrayed, turning her into the monster she becomes, but then the trailer seems to just be a live-action Sleeping Beauty. Is this little character detail just an added extra?
I’m also surprised this landed a PG rating. The trailer seems to be for another one of the PG-13 fantasy features we’ve seen for the last several years and the rating reason lists fantasy violence as one of the reasons for its rating… perhaps it just has less of it?
Maleficent arrives in theaters on May 30, check out this latest trailer below.
