Longer, R-Rated Cut of ‘Anchorman 2’ Heading to Theaters

I never saw Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and the reviews didn’t really suggest I was missing out on anything I needed to make a point to rush out and see. The film will be making its way to DVD and Blu-ray on April 1, which is when I’ll likely finally see it, but Paramount is giving the feature one last gasp in theaters with an R-rated, alternate cut of the film with 763 new jokes. Yes, you read that correctly.

“We started talking and realized, we can replace every single joke in the movie with another joke,” director Adam McKay told the NEw York Times. Apparently 95 percent of the gags were stripped out and replaced with alternate bits that had been left behind in the editing process.

Will Ferrell was on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” this week and spoke of the decision saying the original cut ran around four hours and there was talk of releasing it in two parts, “But that didn’t really work so we just had a second editor working the whole time with alternative jokes,” Ferrell said. “It’s the same movie, it’s 20 minutes longer, there’s a musical number we had to cut from the original one, little treats like that.”

The new cut will be released in theaters in the U.S. and U.K. beginning February 28 for one-week only. Of course, then both cuts will be made available on DVD and Blu-ray.
