I’ll be catching Richard Ayode‘s The Double this Sunday here in Toronto and today the first trailer for the film, which is loosely based on Dostoyevsky’s novella of the same name and stars Jesse Eisenberg as a man who is apparently driven insane by the appearance of his Doppelganger. Here’s the official synopsis:
Simon (Jesse Eisenberg) is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. The arrival of a new co-worker, James, serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon’s exact physical double and his opposite — confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon’s horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.
Along with Eisenberg the film co-stars Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn and Noah Taylor.
Ayode is a man we associate with comedies, but with that synopsis and this trailer I still can’t tell if this is meant to be a comedy or a paranoid thriller, but as I said when I posted a batch of pictures from the film back in July, perhaps it’s a paranoid comedy?
Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think.
