My schedule for the 2013 Toronto Film Festival continues to shift and at the moment it may be hard to fit James Franco‘s Child of God into the mix, but I’m certainly going to try. After seeing As I Lay Dying (review here) at the Cannes Film Festival, Franco proved he’s not just churning these out for shits and giggles, he’s definitely got an eye and an interesting approach and it will be interesting to see what he can do with Cormac McCarthy‘s material.
Set in mountainous Sevier County, Tennessee in the 1960s, Child of God tells the story of Lester Ballard (Scot Haze), a dispossessed, violent man whom the narrator describes as “a child of God much like yourself perhaps.” Ballard’s life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order. Deprived of both his parents and a home, and with few other ties, Ballard descends to the level of a cave dweller, falling deeper into crime and degradation.
