A new international trailer for Carl Rinsch‘s 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves has arrived for additional judgment. The long-delayed movie is currently said to carry a budget around $175 million, though that seems low given all the production woes the film faced. My biggest wonder is will this film be able to recoup its costs?
I have to assume it won’t do all that well domestically. Universal has delayed this thing so long and unlike World War Z it hasn’t received the same kind of post-production help that film received. Also, I’m sorry, but Reeves isn’t on par when it comes to star status compared to Brad Pitt.
The overseas potential seems decent, however. International audiences seem to love 3D and a martial arts pic with fantasy elements should find some success. How much I’m not sure, but it may be a more interesting movie in terms of economics than actual substance.

From ancient Japan’s most enduring tale, the epic 3D fantasy-adventure 47 Ronin is born. Keanu Reeves leads the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the leader of 47 outcast samurai. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors.
47 Ronin is helmed by visionary director Carl Erik Rinsch (The Gift). Inspired by styles as diverse as Miyazaki and Hokusai, Rinsch will bring to life the stunning landscapes and enormous battles that will display the timeless Ronin story to global audiences in a way that’s never been seen before.
