This New Jean-Luc Godard Trailer is a Mess

So Kevin at The Playlist found this trailer for Jean-Luc Godard‘s upcoming Adieu au language (Goodbye to Language), which was apparently shot in 3-D, something the trailer itself suggests at the outset as if to suggest only the “smart” ones in the crowd will catch on to the little suggestion.

It won’t be Godard’s first foray into 3-D as his contribution to 3X3D, which screened in Cannes this year, was also in 3-D, but you’re going to have a hard time coercing me into the theater to watch the entirety of this shoddy-looking, handheld mess.

Adieu au language apparently focuses on a man and his wife who no longer speak the same language and eventually a dog they take on walks intervenes and speaks. The conceit sounds just fine, but the trailer is another story.

To begin, the cast looks like a bunch of precious young actors, enamored with the fact they’re in a Godard film more than anything else and the dog looks like a stray they found in the park and stopped to grab a few shots as long as it was willing to sit still. Then there’s the look of the whole thing. You want to shoot on shitty looking digital? Fine. But if you want to do it in 3-D hold the damn camera still so I don’t have a seizure while watching it.

Godard is one of my favorite filmmakers of all-time and he made what very well may be what I consider the best film of all-time, but I can’t ignore the fact this looks lazy and pretentious.

Oh, and this is not safe for work due to some full-frontal female nudity. IN 3-D!!!!
