‘The Woman in the Fifth’ International Trailer Starring Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas

UK distributor Artificial Eye has debuted the international trailer for The Woman in the Fifth, which stars Ethan Hawke and Kristen Scott Thomas and directed by Pawel Pawlikowski. The thriller hits theaters in the UK on February 17, and will arrive stateside later this year courtesy of ATO Pictures.

The story centers on American writer Tom Ricks (Hawke) who comes to Paris desperate to put his life together again and win back the love of his estranged wife and daughter. When things don’t go according to plan, he ends up in a shady hotel in the suburbs, having to work as a night guard to make ends meet. Then Margit (Thomas), a beautiful, mysterious stranger walks into his life and things start looking up. Their passionate and intense relationship triggers a string of inexplicable events… as if an obscure power is taking control of his life.

I wanted to see the film in Toronto last year, but scheduling forced me to miss it. Reviews out of Toronto make it sound rather appealing though with John DeFore at The Hollywood Reporter saying, “The Woman in the Fifth takes a path viewers may not expect but is hypnotic enough to succeed in arthouses starved for the combination of sensuality and the romanticization of literature.”

And Allan Hunter at Screen Daily opens his review saying, “Director Pawel Pawlikowski ventures into the dark heart of classic Roman Polanski territory with The Woman In The Fifth, a bewildering, Kafkaesque conundrum set in the murky shadows of an unfamiliar Paris.”
