J.J. Abrams Talks ‘Star Trek 2’ and Reveals a New ‘Super 8’ Trailer

Over the weekend the press junket for Super 8 took place and in the midst of discussing that movie, director J.J. Abrams also alluded to where he plans on going next. “The next thing we’re working on, and hopefully we’ll be able to pass information out sooner or later, is the next Star Trek,” he said, which is the closest we’ve come to confirmation that he will indeed direct Star Trek 2, though that’s far from a signed contract.

However, what about that pesky June 29, 2012 release date that was set a couple years back? The one I recently mentioned may in fact get bumped to the end of the year?

“I care much more that it be good than it be ready. I’m, obviously doing everything I can to make sure that schedules don’t get screwed up. But I don’t think anyone wants a movie on time that’s not worth your time,” he said. “We want to make sure it’s done right. The guys I’ve been working with are obviously brilliant so I’m really excited to get back into it. So this is something I’ve been working on pretty closely, so in part they’re like, fine we’ll meet you to discuss.”

So it sounds like it was just a matter of priority and with Super 8 ready to hit theaters this Friday Abrams can now turn his attention back to the crew of the Enterprise, which is pretty much what Star Trek 2 co-writer Roberto Orci said last month in a forum post at Trek Movie:

Just been waiting for JJ [Abrams] to be free to really decide if he likes the story and hear his suggestions before we finish the script. Once he says go, we’ll have it in no time. Meanwhile, our outline is detailed enough (70+ pages!) to do some prep :)… In the meetings we’ve had with JJ, he’s already given us amazing input and ideas, and that’s been while he’s been up to his eyeballs in Super 8.

As of now, the plot has yet to be revealed and it sounds like none of us should be surprised if that release date gets bumped to Holiday 2012. No sweat as far as I am concerned. I, for one, would like to see a better movie than a rushed movie.

As for Super 8, like I said, it hits theaters this Friday and here’s a new trailer which premiered at last night’s MTV Movie Awards for you to view. For more on the film click here.
