Well, the first picture arrived last night and the teaser trailer arrives this evening as Yahoo has debuted the first trailer from Columbia Pictures’ The Smurfs, which hits theaters on August 3, 2011. The film is directed by Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo) and features the voices of Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming , Fred Armisen, Anton Yelchin, Paul Reubens, John Oliver, Kenan Thompson, B.J. Novak and Jeff Foxworthy while Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria and Sofia Vergara have roles as live-action characters.
The film begins in the Middle Ages where Gargamel (Azaria) discovers the Smurfs’ magical village and scatters them into the woods. Clumsy Smurf (Yelchin) accidentally goes the wrong way into a forbidden grotto where a few other Smurfs follow where a magical portal transports them to Central Park where they take refuge with a husband and wife (Neil Patrick Harris and Glee’s Jayma Mays). Gargamel ends up pursuing them.
