What do we know about Thelma?

Thelma was written and directed by Josh Margolin. Along with Squibb and Roundtree, the movie stars Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus, Fear Street), Parker Posey (Beau Is Afraid, Lost in Space), Clark Gregg (The Avengers, Being the Ricardos), and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange).

Per Deadline, Thelma is based on real-life experiences that happened to Margolin’s grandmother. In the movie, “the 93-year-old Thelma (Squibb) gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, then setting out on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her.”

According to Magnolia Pictures & Magnet Releasing, Squibb, who is 94, did most of her own stunts in Thelma.

Zoë Worth, Chris Kaye, Nicholas Weinstock, Benjamin Simpson, Karl Spoerri, and Viviana Vezzani produced the movie, while Kat Barnette served as a co-producer. Executive producers include Squibb, Hechinger, and Tobias Gutzwiller.

Thelma premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, where it was met with positive reviews from critics. The film currently has a 98 percent critics score, based on 54 reviews, on Rotten Tomatoes.

Prior to Thelma, Squibb was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in 2013’s Nebraska. She’s also starred in movies such as 1993’s The Age of Innocence, 1998’s Meet Joe Black, 2002’s About Schmidt, 2002’s Far From Heaven, 2019’s Toy Story 4, 2020’s Hubie Halloween, and more.

Thelma opens in United States theaters on June 21, 2024.
