What is Mea Culpa about?

“The steamy film, which arrives on Netflix on February 23, is about criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), who takes on the murder case against Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), an artist accused of killing his girlfriend. As she tries to figure out if her cagy and seductive client is as innocent as he claims, Mea gets thrust into a world that’s both hot and dangerous,” the synopsis reads.

Along with Rowland (Freddy vs. Jason, Think Like a Man) and Rhodes (Moonlight, The United States vs. Billie Holiday), Mea Culpa stars Nick Sagar (The Princess Switch, The Haves and the Have Nots), Sean Sagar (The Covenant, The Gentlemen), RonReaco Lee (First Wives Club, Let’s Stay Together), and Shannon Thornton (P-Valley, Dynasty).

Perry and Rowland produce the movie alongside Dianne Ashford, Will Areu, and Angi Bones.

In October 2023, Perry signed a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix to write, direct, and produce movies for Netflix. While he previously made 2020’s A Fall from Grace, 2022’s A Jazzman’s Blues, and 2022’s A Madea Homecoming for the streaming platform, he’s now also working on a World War II drama, Six Triple Eight, starring Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, and Dean Norris.

Mea Culpa releases on Netflix on February 23, 2024.
