The first trailer for Mothers’ Instinct previews an intensely dramatic thriller starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway.
StudioCanal UK has released the first trailer for Mothers’ Instinct, a new thriller directed by Benoit Delhomme. The footage sees Chastain and Hathaway play neighbors whose friendship gives way to something much darker after the tragic and unexpected death of one of the character’s children.

What is Mothers’ Instinct about?
“Starring Academy Award winners Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, Mothers’ Instinct is an unnerving psychological thriller about two best friends and neighbors, Alice and Céline, whose perfect lives in ‘60s suburbia are shattered by a tragic accident involving one of their children,” the synopsis reads. “Marking the directorial debut of acclaimed cinematographer Benoit Delhomme, we follow Alice and Céline as their familial bonds are gradually undermined by guilt and paranoia and a gripping battle of wills develops, revealing the darker side of maternal love.”
Mothers’ Instinct is a remake of a 2018 Belgian thriller of the same name directed by Olivier Masset-Depasse. The 2018 film is also an adaptation of a 2012 novel written by Barbara Abel.
Sarah Conradt writes the screenplay for Mothers’ Instinct, while Josh Charles and Anders Danielsen Lie also star. Delhomme has served as a cinematographer on films such as 1997’s Artemisia, 2005’s The Proposition, 2007’s 1408, 2008’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, 2014’s The Theory of Everything, and 2018’s At Eternity’s Gate.
Chastain previously compared the movie to 1962’s What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? when speaking in Indiewire in April 2023. She added, “Of course it’s a different kind of film, but it’s this idea of these two actresses coming together and playing this…the tension I think is very interesting. Thank god Annie and I love each other, so it’s a little different than that experience.”
Mothers’ Instinct does not yet have an official release date.
