The Umbrella Men: Escape from Robben Island is a new South African film directed by John Barker that serves as a sequel to 2022’s The Umbrella Men. Co-written by Barker and Philip Roberts, the film is celebrating its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2023.

What is The Umbrella Men: Escape from Robben Island about?
“After the successful Umbrella Men heist, our usual suspects, Jerome, Morty, Mila, Keisha and Auntie Val finds life is sweet,” the official synopsis reads. “But that’s when Tariq takes a hand. And not before long, Jerome and Morty are banged up in the recently re-opened Robben Island Prison and Keisha, Mila and Auntie Val need to bust them out- and team up to take down an outa-control Tariq, who has plans of world domination and clear their names so that they can get to the Bo Kaap as free men.”
The film stars Jaques De Silva, Shamilla Miller, Keenan Arrison, Bronte Snell, Kagiso Lediga, Sivuyile Ngesi, Rob Van Vuuren, and June van Merch. Joel Phiri, Dan Jawitz, Tshepiso Chikapa Phiri, and Barker all serve as producers. Motheo Moeng acts as the director of photography, Saki Bergh as editor, and Loukman Adams as composer.
The Umbrella Men originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022. Similar to the sequel, the film was directed by Barker and starred De Silva, Miller, Arrison, Snell, and Abduragman Adams.
The Umbrella Men: Escape from Robben Island premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2023.
