Focus Features released the debut Stillwater trailer for the upcoming Matt Damon drama. Damon plays an American oil-rig worker in France that is trying to free his daughter (played by Abigail Breslin), who has been charged with murder. The Tom McCarthy-directed film releases July 30, 2021, so we’re just a few months away from it releasing in theaters.

Stillwater focuses on Bill Baker (Damon), an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter, who is in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill builds a new life for himself in France as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.

Alongside Damon (Ford v. Ferrari, The Last Duel), the cast for the film includes Academy Award nominee Breslin (Zombieland: Double Tap, Scream Queens), César Award nominee Camille Cottin (Killing Eve, House of Gucci), and Deanna Dunagan (The Visit, An Acceptable Loss).

McCarthy, who last co-wrote and directed the Disney+ film adaptation of Stephen Pastis’ Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, directs the film on a script he co-wrote alongside Marcus Hinchey (All Good Things, Come Sunday), Thomas Bidegain (Rust and Bone, The Sisters Brothers) and Noé Debré (We’re Not Animals, Dheepan).
