Focus Features Sets July Release for Matt Damon-Led Stillwater

After being pulled from the studio’s calendar and its initial November 2020 release, Focus Features has lined up a new date for the Matt Damon-led dramatic thriller Stillwater from Academy Award winner Tom McCarthy (Spotlight) for July 30.

The film centers on Bill Baker, an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter, in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill builds a new life for himself in France as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.

McCarthy, who last co-wrote and directed the Disney+ film adaptation of Stephen Pastis’ Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, directs the film on a script he co-wrote alongside Marcus Hinchey (All Good Things, Come Sunday), Thomas Bidegain (Rust and Bone, The Sisters Brothers) and Noé Debré (We’re Not Animals, Dheepan).

Alongside Damon (Ford v. Ferrari, The Last Duel), the cast for the film includes Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin (Zombieland: Double Tap, Scream Queens), César Award nominee Camille Cottin (Killing Eve, House of Gucci) and Deanna Dunagan (The Visit, An Acceptable Loss).
