Art becomes lethal in the Velvet Buzzsaw trailer
With 2014’s Nightcrawler writer/director Dan Gilroy showed the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles where violent crime and local media intersect — and overlap. In the legal drama Roman J. Israel, Esq., he used the city as a backdrop for the stubbornness of social change. Now, the filmmaker is showing an all-new side to the City of Angels with the Netflix horror/thriller Velvet Buzzsaw. You can check out the trailer in the player below!
A thriller set in the shallow, vapid world of L.A.’s contemporary art scene, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce. After a series of paintings are found in a dead hermit’s apartment, they become all the rage, before their supernatural powers slowly start creeping off of the canvas and into real-life.
Velvet Buzzsaw reunites Gilroy with Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. It co-stars Toni Collette (Hereditary), Zawe Ashton (Nocturnal Animals), Tom Sturridge (Sweetbitter), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting), and John Malkovich (Bird Box).
The film will have its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival later this month before premiering on Netflix on February 1.
