19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations Announced

This morning, the awards season got real with the announcement of the nominations for the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards by Busy Phillips and Taye Diggs. 13 awards were announced, five for film and eight for television with Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln and David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook each receiving four nominations. The big screen musical Les Misérables received three.

The big award in the film category is the Outstanding Performance by the Cast of a Motion Picture and receiving nominations this year were:

Argo (Warner Bros.)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Fox Searchlight)

Les Misérables (Universal)

Lincoln (DreamWorks) and

Silver Linings Playbook (The Weinstein Co.)

Noticeably missing was Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, which has been sweeping most of the early critics’ awards as well as the National Board of Review. Not receiving a SAG Ensemble nomination does hurt a movie’s chances of winning Best Picture at the Oscars and also absent was the cast for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (The Weinstein Company), which is odd since his previous film Inglourious Basterds won the SAG Ensemble award three years ago against Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, which went on to win Best Picture.

Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, John Hawkes, Hugh Jackman and Denzel Washington received nominations in the Lead Actor category, while Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Lawrence, Helen Mirren and Naomi Watts received the female counterpart of that category. Supporting nominations went to Alan Arkin, Javier Bardem, Robert De Niro, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tommy Lee Jones in the Supporting Actor category and Sally Field, Anne Hathaway, Helen Hunt, Nicole Kidman and Maggie Smith in the Female Supporting category.

The nominations for Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and the Bond movie Skyfall may be seen by some as a surprise, as well as the fact that Helen Mirren received a nomination for Hitchcock but not Anthony Hopkins for the title role (in a much more crowded category), but clearly screening earlier in the year and having DVD screeners readily available helped many of this year’s nominees. (Neither Zero Dark Thirty nor Django Unchained were finished in time to send out screeners.) Also surprising in their omission were Hoffman’s The Master co-stars Joaquin Phoenix (who may have ruffled some feathers with his anti-awards rhetoric a few months back) and Amy Adams.

As far as the television nominations, Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Cast in a Comedy Series received six nominees: “30 Rock,” “The Big Bang Theory, “Glee,” “Modern Family,” “The Office” and “Nurse Jackie” while Drama Series nominations went to “Boardwalk Empire,” “Breaking Bad,” “Downton Abbey,” “Homeland” and “Mad Men.”

Dick Van Dyke will receive a Life Achievement Award.
